For many travellers, Rioja is synonymous with wine. Cyclists quickly discover something much bigger. Quiet roads twist through a landscape of vineyards, castles, monasteries and limestone mountains. Distances between villages are short, traffic is remarkably light and almost every ride ends in a lively plaza where lunch stretches well into the afternoon.
It is this combination of exceptional riding, authentic culture and understated luxury that makes La Rioja one of our favourite cycling destinations in Spain.
As specialists in bike tours in Spain, we’ve explored the best routes in the region on our La Rioja bike tours, refining routes that connect its most rewarding roads, villages and landscapes. Our Cycling Rioja: Vineyards, Villages & Mountains tour was created to showcase the very best of the region, from the iconic vineyards around Laguardia and Haro to the mountain roads of the Sierra de la Demanda and the UNESCO-listed monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla.
After welcoming thousands of cyclists to Spain over the past decade, we’ve found that La Rioja consistently surprises even the most experienced riders. Many arrive expecting vineyards. They leave talking about medieval villages, spectacular scenery, unforgettable meals and some of the quietest roads they’ve ever ridden.
Whether you’re planning your own itinerary or considering one of our guided or self-guided journeys, this guide will help you discover why La Rioja deserves a place on every cyclist’s bucket list.
Unlike many famous cycling destinations, La Rioja has never become overcrowded.
Instead of battling busy roads, you’ll often ride for kilometres without seeing another cyclist.
What makes the region so special?
For cyclists, this creates one of Spain’s most enjoyable riding environments.
Located in northern Spain, La Rioja sits between the Basque Country, Navarra and Castilla y León.
Although it is Spain’s smallest autonomous region, it offers extraordinary diversity.
To the north rises the Sierra de Cantabria.
To the south lie the mountains of the Sierra de la Demanda.
Between them flows the River Ebro, creating an ideal climate for vineyards and some of Spain’s most picturesque cycling roads.

Many cycling destinations offer beautiful roads.
Others offer wonderful food.
Others have fascinating history.
Very few combine all three as naturally as La Rioja.
A typical day might include:
That rhythm is what makes La Rioja so addictive.
Perched high above the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa, Laguardia is arguably the most beautiful medieval village in northern Spain. Its perfectly preserved stone walls, pedestrian streets and panoramic views across the Ebro Valley make it an unforgettable place to begin or end a day’s ride.

This makes La Rioja ideal for:
✅ Gravel bikes
✅ E-bikes
✅ Leisure cyclists
✅ Experienced riders

Spring is arguably the most beautiful season.
Fresh green vineyards.
Wildflowers.
Cool temperatures.
Autumn is equally spectacular.
During harvest, vineyards turn gold, orange and crimson, transforming the landscape.
Summer offers long days but can become hot during the afternoon.
Winter remains surprisingly rideable thanks to the relatively mild climate.
If you’re spending the night in Laguardia, wake up early and walk to the western town walls before breakfast. Watching the sunrise over the vineyards with the Sierra de Cantabria in the background is one of those moments that photographs never quite capture.
From there, ride towards San Vicente de la Sonsierra on the quiet backroads that weave through the vineyards rather than following the main road. It’s one of our favourite stretches of cycling in La Rioja, especially during September when the vines begin to turn gold and crimson.
