Not every cycling holiday needs to be about speed, performance or conquering famous climbs.
For many of our guests, the pleasure of cycling comes from travelling through a beautiful landscape at a comfortable pace, stopping for coffee in a village square, visiting a winery or simply taking the time to look around.
That’s exactly where a touring bike comes into its own.
With a more upright and relaxed riding position, stable handling and comfortable geometry, touring bikes are designed for long days of exploration rather than performance. They’re equally at home on quiet paved roads and easy non-technical trails, giving us the flexibility to choose routes for their beauty rather than simply their surface.
Catalonia is a wonderful destination for bicycle touring because there’s always something worth stopping for.
Beyond Girona’s famous road cycling culture, quiet country lanes connect medieval villages, vineyards, forests and the rural landscapes of the Empordà before eventually reaching the Mediterranean.
On a touring bike, the focus doesn’t need to be on tackling the region’s biggest climbs. Instead, you can ride comfortably between places such as Pals, Peratallada and Monells, explore the countryside surrounding Girona and continue towards the beautiful landscapes of the Costa Brava.
Our Catalonia journey averages around 45 to 58 km per day, making it possible to cover meaningful distances while still leaving time to explore the places you’re riding through.
This is cycling as a form of travel rather than training.
If there’s one destination that captures the spirit of bicycle touring, it might be La Rioja.
The landscape is characterised by vineyard-covered valleys, rolling hills and quiet rural roads connecting medieval villages and historic wineries.
Our La Rioja journey typically covers around 30 to 50 km per day with relatively gentle elevation, making it particularly well suited to recreational cyclists and travellers who want the cycling to be part of a wider cultural experience.
Ride through the vineyards in the morning. Stop in a medieval village for coffee. Visit a winery. Enjoy a long lunch.
There is no need to rush.
And that’s exactly the point.
Touring bikes are particularly well suited to riders who prioritise comfort and stability over speed.
The more upright riding position places less emphasis on an aggressive cycling posture and allows you to look around and enjoy the landscape as you ride.
They’re a great choice for recreational cyclists, travellers returning to cycling after some time away and experienced riders who simply don’t want their holiday to feel like a training camp.
They’re also ideal for routes combining paved roads with easy gravel tracks or other non-technical surfaces.
If you’re comfortable riding a bicycle but don’t identify as a serious road cyclist or mountain biker, a touring bike may be exactly what you’re looking for.
The biggest difference is assistance.
Both can offer a comfortable, upright riding position, but a conventional touring bike still relies entirely on your own pedalling. An e-bike provides electric assistance when you need it, particularly on hills or longer days.
For riders who enjoy cycling and are comfortable with the distances involved, a touring bike provides a wonderfully simple and natural way to travel.
If you’re concerned about climbing, fitness or keeping pace with a stronger partner, an e-bike tour in Spain may be the better choice.
Either way, the philosophy is the same: the bicycle is there to help you experience the destination.
At Live Love Ride, we believe bicycle touring should give you time to experience the places you’re travelling through.
That’s why our routes aren’t designed simply around distance.
We look for beautiful secondary roads, peaceful countryside, interesting villages and easy trails that allow you to explore Spain comfortably while connecting the places that make each region special.
We combine those routes with professional bike fitting, carefully selected hotels, luggage logistics and local support throughout your journey.
Because sometimes the best cycling holiday isn’t about riding faster.
It’s about having more time to look around.
